Imran Khan Acquitted in Cipher Case What Happens Next?

Former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and former foreign minister of Pakistan Shah Mahood were acquitted in the Cipher case by the Islamabad High Court today after a long hearing. In this news blog, we will cover this story in detail and discuss all the aspects.

What is a Cipher Case?

Before going any further, let’s talk about the Cipher case. The Cipher case is actually a case where Imran Khan claims that his government was removed because of America. He claims this on the basis of a conversation between the Pakistani ambassador to the United States, Asad Majeed, and US diplomat Donald Lu. This meeting and the conversation between Asad Majeed and Donald Lu were written by Asad Majeed and sent to Pakistan through diplomatic means.

Later on, when Imran Khan was still prime minister of Pakistan, he highlighted this later in a public gathering in Islamabad and said that this was the Cipher letter where Donald lu said to the Pakistan ambassador in the United States to remove khans governed otherwise you will face consequences.

When Khan’s government was removed by a no-confidence motion by the so-called opposition alliance, the new joint government by the opposition used the Federal Investigative Agency (FIA) to investigate this matter and then arrested Imran Khan last year in this case.

This year, in January, the special court issued a 10-year prison sentence to both Imran Khan and his foreign minister, Shah Mahood, before the general election in Pakistan. Imran Khan and his foreign minister file an appeal application in the Islamabad High Court and argue that the case was not properly conducted and listened to.

What Happened Today?

Today, June 3, 2024, the Islamabad High Court announced the acquittal of Imran Khan and his foreign minister after months of hearing. This was an expected decision because the government prosecutor had not been so keen and involved in this case, while the lawyer from the Khan side did their best to prove everything and provide any argument that showed that there was nothing linked to the official secret act or any act that is against the official secret act of Pakistan.

Imran Khans is a New Challenge for Government

This news is not good for the government because Khans was sentenced for 10 years, and this is not in the favor of the government and their so-called facilitators. The reason is that this was only a serious case against Khan, and if Khan would get acquitted in this case, there would not be any serious case in the future that would stop him from coming out of jail.

Another Consipracy Regarding This Case

According to some political analysts, the establishment in Pakistan is behind this all because, in Pakistan, the most powerful entity is Pakistani establishment. Everything is controlled by Pak Establishment, including the bureaucracy, judiciary, etc. we cannot ignore this arguments because the past history of Pakistan is same where many political events happened and later on, it was found that the Pakistani establishment was involved in these events, e.g. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s death sentence through court, etc.

What Lies Ahead?

Many political analyst claim that sooner or later, khan will be out of jail because all the cases was registered in hurry and there were no real case against khan until today. So we can expect Imran Khan to be out of bar soon.

Furthermore, in recent elections, the Khan Party got higher seats in national assembly of Pakistan even though he was in jail and his party symbol was taken by Supreme Court of Pakistan.  The people of Pakistan have supported Khan throughout this time and still standing with him, which is quite challenging for current regime and establishment in Pakistan.

The current regime thinks that if the khan comes out of jail, then the situation will be more critical and not in the favor of the current regime, as Imran Khan is not interested in any dialogue with the current government due to the stance that this current government does not have moral ground as it came through immense rigging, and secondly, the current regime was only created by establishment while the people of Pakistan are standing with the khan. So the current regime does not have the moral ground to govern the people of Pakistan. This is quite challenging for the current regime to handle in the future if Khan comes out of jail.

On the other side, many of cases against khan were already dismissed by the courts and there is a great possibility that all the remaining cases where khan was sentenced and punished by local court will be dismissed soon or later, as these cases are made by current regime without any solid evidence.

All the recent events in Pakistan clearly indicate that Imran Khan will soon or later be released from jail and once again start his politics in Pakistan due to the fact that the majority of Pakistanis stand with him and his stance against the current regime.

If this happens, which is quite possible now, then it will be considered a defining movement of Pakistan where one political leader have more control and power as compared to establishment and their regime.
